International Broadcast Centre (IBC), located at Tokyo Big Sight, provided equipment and technical support that allowed images of athletes and competition events to be shared around the world. IBC not only supplied cameras, monitors, and production equipment to the Olympic Broadcasting Services (OBS) and select broadcast rights-holders, it also took charge of broadcast system design, construction, and technical support, and facilitated broadcasts from about 50 competition venues. In addition, the 4K/HD Simulcast?a first at the Games?realized a higher-definition experience through the largest number of lines ever.

SecurityLargest Number of Security Cameras Ever Deployed

Tokyo 2020 was unique in that there was no Olympic Park precinct as there has been at previous games. Venues and the Olympic and Paralympic Village were instead scattered throughout existing urban areas. In order to achieve integrated security monitoring, approximately 8,000 security cameras*, including those already installed, and some 2,500 sensors were deployed to ensure that venue-based and convention-headquartered security staff could respond to incidents as soon as they occurred. For the first time in the history of the Olympic Games, security personnel were equipped with wearable cameras, allowing headquarters to check live images from the security guards’ perspective. Panasonic contributed to a more complete understanding of the event by making it possible to share images in real time with security agencies.

* Approximately 8,000 cameras including about 1,000 cameras already installed at the venue.

Field EngineeringSmooth Management of a Once-in-a-Lifetime Event

Panasonic installed ultra-bright projectors, LED large-screen display systems, large RAMSA line-array speakers, and other equipment at Olympic Stadium, Tokyo Aquatics Centre, and other competition venues and events. We were also responsible for installation of about 8,000 security cameras* at about 48 locations to ensure safe and secure event staging. In addition, field engineers worked around the clock to ensure that all systems were running smoothly. The control center collected data on equipment failures at each venue, monitored the engineers’ status, controlled the entire system, and made it possible to provide prompt on-site support. As it was a summertime event, Panasonic was prepared to respond immediately to system failures caused by electrical surges from lightning strikes. We also responded flexibly with equipment setup adjustment as venue layouts changed. This holistic approach ensured the Tokyo 2020 Games ran smoothly over the entire staging period.

* Approximately 8,000 cameras including about 1,000 cameras already installed at the venue.
