Broadcast Production
Goes Green at Beijing 2022

Panasonic has provided state-of-the-art video and broadcasting solutions to the Olympic and Paralympic Games since the Olympic Games Barcelona 1992, facilitating the first HD broadcast of the Olympic Games Beijing 2008, and the first natively produced Ultra High Definition (UHD) broadcast of Beijing 2022. Panasonic provided Olympic Broadcasting Services (OBS) with equipment at 12 competition venues as well as Main Media Centre (MMC). Panasonic’s sustainable design mandate was a great fit at Beijing 2022, the first-ever carbon-neutral event in the history of the Olympic Games.

IT/IP platform KAIROS is a live video production platform that incorporates proprietary software to maximize CPU and GPU capacity for video processing and to improve system flexibility and scalability. The mainframe system made its large-scale event debut at Tokyo 2020 and performed a similar role at Beijing 2022 by enabling production staff to edit high-resolution footage captured by cameras for transmission and display on the venue’s large LED boards. With application in broadcasting, sporting events, concert staging, conference production, and more, KAIROS promises flexibility and performance unlike any other hardware-based system.

International Broadcast Centre (IBC)

Olympic Broadcasting Services (OBS) invested considerable effort in reducing the resources required to capture, produce, and broadcast Beijing 2022. Panasonic provided a range of energy-efficient production equipment to International Broadcast Centre (IBC), including studio and cinema camera recorders, broadcast monitors, portable recorders, etc. to create an ecosystem supporting 4K broadcast production.

Equipment Introduced
Professional Display Total of 565 Units (Approx.)
Cinema Camera AJ-PX5000 / EVA1 x 50 Units (Approx.)
Portable Recorder AG-HPD24 x 70 Units (Approx.)

National Aquatics Centre Curling

Competing atop the pool in which Michael Phelps won a record-breaking eight gold medals at Beijing 2008, competitors in the Curling event battled it out on four sheets of specially installed ice in the National Aquatics Centre. Panasonic cameras, recorders, and monitors shared the action with spectators present in the venue as well as those watching via 4K/HD simulcast. In addition to processing and outputting 32:9 images to a large LED display inside the venue, Panasonic’s IT/IP platform KAIROS allowed producers to switch, mix, edit, and add effects to video, such as logo and title insertion, with very low latency.
