Panasonic Dazzles with Spatial Projection
at the Olympic Winter Games Beijing 2022
Panasonic first supported projection-mapping for the Opening and Closing Ceremonies of the Olympic Games London 2012, and has exceeded expectations for memorable entertainment experiences at the Olympic Games ever since. At Beijing 2022, Panasonic’s 30,000-lumen-class 3-Chip DLP? projectors lit up competition arenas in a blaze of vivid color. Animated graphics were displayed with realistic dimensionality thanks to the high brightness, contrast, and color performance of these next-generation projectors. The visual entertainment helped to build excitement ahead of events such as curling, ice hockey, figure skating, and speed skating.
National Aquatics Centre Curling
The curling events at Beijing 2022 unfolded on four sheets of thick ice installed atop the pool inside National Aquatics Centre. These ice lanes became screens for a vivid projection show powered by Panasonic PT-RQ35K projectors. These projectors are 40% smaller than previous models, making them much easier to hang from scaffolding directly above the field of play.

National Indoor Stadium Ice Hockey
Tokyo 2020 saw a shift towards the use of projection-mapping on the field of play, a trend that reached its zenith at Beijing 2022 where ice-rink surfaces at venues such as National Indoor Stadium became screens for spectacular visuals as athletes took to the field.

Wukesong Sports Centre Ice Hockey
The ice rink at Wukesong Sports Centre, venue for select ice hockey events, transformed into a mind-bending 3D canvas that shifted between fascinating clockwork puzzles and pools of surging seawater. The astonishing spectacle, made possible by PT-RQ35K 4K laser projectors, hyped excitement to fever pitch ahead of the main event.

National Speed Skating Oval Speed Skating
Most will remember the moment before the 100 m track and field finals at Tokyo 2020 when the lanes suddenly lit up as a giant screen. This incredible feat was somehow bested at National Speed Skating Oval, where PT-RQ35K projectors transformed two 100-meter sections of the rink into vast screens showing digital animations of overwhelming color and brightness.

Capital Indoor Stadium Figure Skating | Short Track Speed Skating
Of all the entertainment staged between events at Capital Indoor Stadium, the figure skating exhibition gala inspired spectators the most. Light, projection, and music accentuated the sport’s elegance as skaters wove in and around animated visuals projected on the rink’s pond-like surface. The vivid red characteristic of the RQ35K Series was particularly impressive during a scene where maple leaves appeared to fall on the rink in a fiery riot of crimson and gold.

Main Press Centre (MPC)
Despite its light and compact body, VMZ60 Series produces an impressive 6,000 lm of brightness, more than enough to cut through bright interior light inside the press conference studio at Main Press Centre (MPC), where it was used to provide a digital backdrop for athlete interviews. The LCD projectors feature an energy-efficient design to meet the IOC mandate for staging the first-ever carbon-neutral Olympic Winter Games.
