Operations Support for Broadcasting

Panasonic not only provided equipment to competition venues, but also to support facilities involved in the management, operation, and broadcast of the Tokyo 2020 Games. At Main Press Centre (MPC), Technology Operation Centre (TOC), and other facilities, Panasonic Professional LCD Displays and SOLID SHINE laser projectors provided clear, sharp, and comfortable image visibility in the brightly lit venues. Both technologies are engineered to work reliably over extended periods of continuous operation.

Main Press Centre (MPC), a workspace available to media personnel, featured a mix of Panasonic 3-Chip DLP™ projectors (PT-RZ21K/PT-RZ12K) for bright, accurate color reproduction, and Professional LCD Displays (TH-55LF8/TH-55LFV8) to provide wide viewing angles. Their excellent detail resolution and clear visibility when viewed off-axis made information easy to read even at a distance in this busy, well-lit environment.

ET-YFB200G DIGITAL LINK Switcher reduced cabling and installation complexity in the venue.

Eleven PT-VMZ50 laser projectors were installed in the Technology Operations Centre (TOC), which was responsible for cybersecurity and other special assignments at the Olympic and Paralympic Games Tokyo 2020. Despite its compact size, PT-VMZ50’s high 5,000 lm* brightness made it possible to share information clearly and comfortably on large screens, while ET-YFB200G DIGITAL LINK Switcher simplified installation by supporting video- and control-signal transmission over long distances via a single STP cable.

* Measurement, measuring conditions, and method of notation all comply with ISO/IEC 21118: 2012 international standards. Value is average of all products when shipped.

Field Engineering

Supporting the Success of a Once-in-a-Lifetime Experience

Panasonic’s support at Tokyo 2020 went beyond equipment supply to the provision of human resources. Experienced staff provided comprehensive on-site support for the event’s duration, from system design and installation to maintenance and operation, leveraging our accumulated organizational knowhow to install systems in a short period of time while offering 24-hour technical support callouts with a lead time of just 30 minutes during competition events.

Security System Support to Ensure Event Safety

System Design

System Design

Panasonic provided a high level of security support with flexibility to respond to last-minute layout and venue changes, such as the marathon event. In particular, camera layout was based on monitoring area priority and traffic flow after repeatedly conducting field surveys.

Device Kitting

Whenever a high volume of work needs to be completed on site to deadline, mistakes inevitably occur, and quality deteriorates. In order to reduce the number of tasks that needed to be performed on site, we set up a Prep Center to kit all equipment and verify correct operation before dispatch to the venue. This initiative reduced on-site workload and maintained a high level of quality at every location.

Construction and Installation

In a short period of about two months, we were able to install systems in all 48 venues to a consistently high standard of quality. In addition, about 3,000 workers with extensive knowledge of the site performed construction work at all 48 venues simultaneously. Although there were last-minute changes in arrangements, and work delays due to bad weather, we were able to complete the project successfully ahead of deadline.

Maintenance and Operation

To avoid interruptions during event competition, our staff were on standby 24 hours a day. We also established system to allow technical support to respond to incidents within 30 minutes. In addition to lightning strikes and heavy rain, unexpected events also occurred, but thanks to our quick response, we were able to control situations as they arose and finished the event without issues.

Peripheral Events

We also provided and supported audio-visual equipment used for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Torch Relay and related events, from pre-testing and rehearsals to installation and operation. Events needed to be set up to a short lead time with ever-present potential for last-minute changes. Panasonic, however, was able to respond flexibly to demands and deliver a satisfying event experience every time.
